As the song says, “I believe the children are our doomed future…” or something like that. Luckily, we don’t have to wait – the apocalyptical future is already here! And that future is right on our doorstep in Exeter in a new three-book YAlit series by former Teignbridge media and PR guru-type person Michelle Kenney.

Huge congratulations to Michelle Kenney (above) – our 33rd student to get a book deal – whose debut YA novel Book of Fire is to be published by HarperCollins imprint HQ Digital on 25 August. Michelle studied on our online Writing YA and Children’s Fiction course in Autumn 2015, and developed the novel in a series of workshops and one-to-one tutorials with her 14 coursemates and tutor Catherine Johnson.
My first thoughts
I was lucky enough to win a proof copy of this wonderful debut novel. I devoured it, I loved it, I want someone to wipe my memory so I can read it all over again. I felt like I was dipping into a world born from my childhood favourite sci-fi movies and books. From Logan’s Run to Mad Max, this book was what I always wanted.
Michelle Kenney’s debut novel Book of Fire is a great example of Young Adult fiction.
After I started reading the novel, I accidentally went on the news and well, the book started to sound as something that may happen. Anyway, it is happening after the catastrophe that devastated the world and divided it into Insiders and Outsiders. While the Outsiders live more or less in harmony with nature, the Insiders are toying with genetic modification.

‘The book of fire’ by Michelle Kenney is the most exciting and imaginative fantasy novel I have read in years. It is a story of survival, strength and loyalty as well as cruelty, deception and evil.
